Employment

Mental health problems are one of the most significant causes of stress-related absences, conflict at work and, in some cases, total breakdown in the relationship between employer and employee. Moreover, companies are increasingly facing litigation brought by employees who allege they have suffered psychological stress in the workplace. Mental health issues are also relevant to much of the legislation that shapes today’s employment practice, such as the Disability Discrimination Act.

Clinical Psychology Associates aims to promote the mental health and well-being of employees, whilst also protecting the interests of employers. Integral to this approach is the comprehensive assessment of an individual’s current and past psychological problems, and the relative impact on their mental health of work-related issues and any other contributory factors that are identified. This process generates a set of recommendations to facilitate an outcome that, wherever possible, will be mutually beneficial for employer and employee.

The following are examples of instructions that have been received by our clinical psychologists:

  • Assessment of an individual’s anger in the workplace and the factors that were exacerbating it
  • Assessment of the contribution of mental health problems to the unprofessional conduct of a senior employee
  • Assessment of the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder on an individual’s ability to work following an industrial accident
  • Assessment of an individual’s cognitive capacity and the implications of this for their suitability to perform a specific work role
  • Assessment of the suitability for long-term employment of an individual with mental health problems
  • Assessment of the contribution of psychological and personality factors to an individual’s disruptive behaviour in the workplace
  • Provision of expert witness testimony at employment tribunals
  • Provision of psychological treatment for anxiety, depression and other mental health problems in order to facilitate return to work
