Children and families

Clinical Psychology Associates offers a wide range of services which provide parents with expert advice and support, and help children and adolescents to resolve any difficulties they are experiencing. All of these services are provided by experienced and highly skilled clinical psychologists who specialise in working with children and their families.

One-to-one assistance

We offer immediate access to effective psychological assessment and evidence-based therapeutic interventions to help children and adolescents resolve a wide range of emotional and behavioural difficulties, including: conduct problems, attachment difficulties, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger control problems, pain management, and adjustment problems following adverse life events such as family breakdown or bereavement.

On this type of sessional basis, we also provide one-to-one advice to parents who are seeking to build stronger relationships with their children and manage any difficult behaviours they may be showing in the most effective ways. This enables our specialist clinical psychologists to assess the circumstances and specific needs of individual parents and their children, and tailor their expert parenting advice accordingly.

Individual Development Programme

For parents requiring more intensive advice and support, we offer a bespoke service in which the most appropriate clinical psychologist is allocated to a family and given the opportunity to spend significant time in their home environment. This enables them to observe closely children’s behaviour and interactions with their parents before making specific recommendations and ensuring that these are put into practice correctly in the home. A follow-up visit is then arranged – usually for several weeks later – so that progress can be reviewed, and a combination of telephone and e-mail support is provided in the interim period.

'Positive Parenting' workshops

We run a rolling programme of one-day ‘Positive Parenting’ workshops in locations across the UK. These highly informative workshops draw on the latest parenting interventions which have proven effectiveness, such as the ‘Incredible Years’ Parent Training Program. They are designed to give all parents access to some of the most useful methods for building strong, positive relationships with their children and managing any difficult behaviours more easily. Everyone who attends a workshop is given materials to take home to make sure they can remember everything they have learnt and apply the techniques with their own children.

E-mail support

Our specialist clinical psychologists can provide tailored parenting advice via e-mail. This can be particularly useful for parents who cannot access one-to-one assistance, or for those who have attended a ‘Positive Parenting’ workshop and would either like additional suggestions or specific advice on how to translate the techniques into interactions with their own children. We always ensure that when someone accesses e-mail support, the same clinical psychologist responds to their e-mails throughout the correspondence.
